Bouncepads: There are three strong bouncepads that can be used to reach almost all parts of the map in a single bound, but it will take skill and practice to make the best use of the bouncepads. There are also a number of teleports and ladders (both visable and invisible) around the map. Cover and Play Styles: Although there are many sniping spots on this map, there are also many places with cover including the items on the hutch shelves and the upper book shelves. The map is designed to promote running, hiding, sniping, gunning and general mayhem with a great deal of connectivity some of which is hidden (don't be afraid to explore). Players spawn with longjump, shotgun, 9mmAR, pistol and of course crowbar as well as some different types of ammo. There are a number of health and armor rechargers that are a bit hidden in plain sight ... they just don't look like rechargers ... ok, I relented and put in a couple of regular ones. Map Scale and Size: This map is not a Rats scale but rather a Roach scale map! Legacy: DesktopRoaches2019 started out as a remake of Rev's DesktopRoaches map that he lost the source for it in a disk crash way back in 2002. ======================================================= Tools and Info: --------------- original HLDM map: Rev (Ace Ventura) and qUiCkSiLvEr author's email: quicksilver@qsextreme.com editor used: Hammer 3.5 Build 2363 with my slightly customized FGD Zoner's compile tools utilities used: Valve SDK, Wally, MilkShape, several image manipulation tools. I used several models that Docrock used on some of his maps including the big roach model that I made for him for his camper_rats map and small cars he used in another map. I also used some small parts of Grimlock's Atticrats map because that map is one of our all-time favorites. known bugs: ----------- The map distribution (unzipped) is large (53MB) and may be difficult on servers that do not have fast HTTP download capability. Players that download the map off servers may not see the large independant cockroaches that spawn occasionally around the map but players that install from the .7z archive will. Servers that do not have mp_allowmonsters will not see any cockroaches. Compile Information: ==================== Compile machine: Intel I7 2.5GHz Laptop with 32GB DDR RAM Compile times: HLCSG: 1.01 seconds elapsed HLBSP: 2.97 seconds elapsed HLVIS: 65.47 seconds elapsed [1m 5s] HLRAD: 51.49 seconds elapsed map edits: There were more then 120 edits and at least 100 compiles from 12Sep2019 to 21Oct2019 (+1 month) but a lot of that was reconstructing the map design and updating all the textures. ======================================================= SECRETS NOTE: There are several small secrets on this map, mostly added to improve connectivity or a quick escape from a difficult position. The secrets are here specifically to inspire players to explore and learn the map and how it works. There are also a number of invisible ladders on surfaces that dramatically improve the connectivity in the map. ======================================================= INSTALLATION: ---------------------- DesktopRoaches2019.7z includes all subfolders. There should be 34 files in the distribution.
